Escape from an overcrowded home

Harbour Village, Ebbsfleet

Stacey dreamed of finding a home where her family could grow up with the space they desperately needed. She looked into how she could buy a home and came across shared ownership.

What led you to buy through shared ownership?

I was living in an overcrowded council flat with a waitlist of up to 7 years to move, even with a good salary and a stable full time job. I knew I had to take control of my housing situation so I looked for affordable opportunities that could help me buy a house. Shared Ownership was the best solution for me and has allowed me to take that much needed step towards home satisfaction.

I was obviously very nervous, as like with everything there are always horror stories, but I did a lot of research on the property type, the area and development opportunities that helped me to make a more informed decision.

How was your experience buying with Moat?

I absolutely loved going through this with Rebecca. She really looked after me throughout the whole process, and I had a lot of questions. They introduced me to great mortgage brokers and solicitors. Rebecca really went above and beyond to make sure I was kept up-to-date every step of the way.

I found the process so swift compared to other friends and relatives I’ve heard go through a similar process. Moat set realistic expectations with timings and next steps. All this really helps when you’re a first time buyer.

What is your favourite thing about your new home and why?

The number one thing is my kids have space! Moving from an overcrowded flat with no garden to a great sized family home with a garden really does a lot for a family’s mood and health (especially your mental health)

Moving out of London has improved my son’s asthma and having an outdoor space has been great to help regulate his autistic triggers. For me, it’s also a massive accomplishment to how far I’ve come. I’m very house proud, which I’ve never really been before - lots of BBQs and family dinners!

Do you have any plans to decorate your home? If so what are you planning/doing at the moment?

I’m keeping things very clean and neutral for now - white space can feel a bit scary to commit to a colour scheme - but accessories have been the best way to add colour. Artwork, textiles, statement furnishings, have all been great ways to add personality while still thinking about what I really like.

I am looking forward to painting some rooms, especially the kids’ room - once I decide on a colour scheme.

What advice would you give to someone considering shared ownership as a housing option?

Do your research! It can be daunting and scary and there are some horror stories out there, but investigate the area, the property type, and what opportunities they can grow into.

The more questions you ask the more informed you are, but also, don’t scare yourself too much out of a good thing. Hopefully I’m still saying this in 10 years (fingers crossed).
