A family’s journey to stability

How did you find out about shared ownership? 

I was being evicted as the landlord wanted to sell. Rental costs were too expensive and I was looking how to house my family at an affordable cost.

What led you to buy through shared ownership? 

It was the only option that was affordable and a way to get on the property ladder.

How did you find the buying process with Moat? What were the good bits and what could have been done better?

It was stressful to purchase a home, as I did an application and didn't know what the process was. I had completed the details online. I was desperate to find a home and had not seen the property or informed what or where to look at what the house would look like completed. I was originally turned down for affordability and I questioned it before having a conversation with Moat's affordability broker that agreed I could afford it. 

It would have been good to be able to look at a show home, the same as if I was buying a freehold property. The staff were friendly throughout and understanding as I did not know what I was doing!

When you saw your new home for the first time, how did it make you feel?

I was overcome with emotion and could not believe how beautiful it was. I had no idea what it was going to be like!

What is your favourite thing about your new home and why? 

The hallway, it feels so welcoming and is light and airy. 

What advice would you give to someone considering shared ownership as a housing option?

Research it before going ahead and doing it. However it is a way to have your own home with the support from a large company and a way to get on the property ladder.
